True libertarians believe that there are three God-given natural rights — life, liberty, property — and that these rights can come into conflict. Life — the right not to be killed — is the most important, because if you’re dead, you can enjoy neither liberty nor property. Liberty — the right not to be enslaved — comes before property because you can’t own property as a slave. Property comes before all other rights, because without property you can’t truly be free.
Libertarians and free market capitalists thus see American slavery as a conflict between liberty and property — and thus support the rights of the slaves as individuals as opposed to the property claims of their masters. Slavery was a failure to adhere to the system of capitalism, not a component of it. Slavery is the farthest from the free market you can get, and capitalism had nothing to do with slavery.
